Regenerating Agricultural Landscapes with Perennial Groundcover for Intensive Crop Production
Resource Description
The Midwestern U.S. landscape, dominated by maize and soybean monocrops, is facing environmental issues such as water quality degradation, soil erosion, and increased flood risk due to intensive farming practices. This study proposes growing these crops with perennial groundcover to restore ecosystem services provided by native perennial plant communities. This approach could potentially enhance grain crop productivity without negative impacts, by improving the biological functioning of the system.
